it's a nervous system pattern.
What Exactly Is Tech Neck?
Over 20 muscles work together to support and stabilize your head. These muscles stretch from the base of your skull down to your shoulders and collarbone - and when your head is out of alignment, they all have to work way harder than they should.
When your neck muscles remain stuck in this imbalanced posture for long periods, they become overworked, tired, and tight, which can lead to symptoms like:
Neck Stiffness and Pain
Shoulder Pain
Back Pain and Stiffness
Muscle spasms
Limited range of motion (rotation or flexion)
Balance problems
Rounded Shoulders
Fatigue
Migraines or Tension Headaches
Chest Tightness
shallow Breathing
These symptoms are your body's way of asking for help -
and that's exactly what the Pain-Free Tech Neck courses can provide.
From constantly tilting the head downward as if looking at a phone
Or from craning the head forward as if trying to look closer at a computer monitor.
Over time, your nervous system starts to treat this posture as your 'new normal.'
Neck muscles become tighter and the bones in your neck (cervical vertebrae) can become compressed. This can pinch the nerves that exit the spinal cord,
and lead to serious issues, such as:
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Disc degeneration
Cervical vertebral degeneration
Bulging or herniated discs
Osteoarthritis
Postural issues such as:
sway back,
flat back,
kyphosis, or
lordosis
And many other related musculoskeletal disorders
Passive treatment: temporary relief without lasting change.
Somatic Movement Exercise: retraining your nervous system through gentle, active awareness.
Traditional methods are most often passive methods, where something is done to you without your active involvement, such as:
chiropractic care
massage
acupuncture
drugs
supplements
physical therapy
surgery
Somatic Movement Exercises involve your active participation, which is key to your success - you consciously move specific parts of your body as guided, engaging your awareness and control.
By doing this, you are retraining your nervous system to release the chronic muscle tension, thereby bringing you the pain relief you’ve been looking for.
Stretching, tools or devices like foam rollers, or even approaches like injections, chiropractic care, physical therapy, and even surgery do NOT address the underlying cause of Forward Head Posture or Tech-Neck.
They simply do not address the root cause and cannot reset the baseline level of muscle tension.
None of these methods are long-lasting; they are only temporary.
The most effective and sustainable method
of reducing and even eliminating
neck tightness and pain is by
retraining the nervous system with
Somatic Movement Exercises.
You see, the more we repeat a specific posture or movement,
even if that posture or movement is something we intend to do, such as:
learning a new golf swing,
learning to ride a horse, or
learning to dance,
it creates a deeply learned pattern in our nervous system,
commonly known as ‘muscle memory.’
That muscle memory retains that level of tension doing us a favor
so we don’t have to work as hard to get into
that same habitual posture or movement again and again.
But sometimes it can get all WONKY
keeping those muscles contracted,
even when they're not supposed to,
and that's when pain shows up!
You can lose voluntary control of your muscles-
meaning they stay tight even when you think you're relaxed!
The good news is:
This muscle memory can be retrained
through a method called
pandiculation.
Pandiculation involves gently contracting a muscle or a muscle group
and then releasing it extremely slowly against gravity or some form of resistance.
This sends accurate biofeedback to the nervous system about how much tension is being held in the muscle in a process called the gamma loop feedback.
It resets the baseline level of tension in the muscles, thereby reducing the tension and pain!
Because pandiculation is an active form of learning, it is cumulative and sustainable.
Somatic Movement Exercises are taught in a specific order for each specific pain condition.
A recent study was conducted that supports Clinical Somatics Education as an effective and sustainable method of reducing pain.
The Science Says YES!
Somatic Movement Education, which was developed by the late Dr. Thomas Hanna, in comparison with other forms of alternative therapies, is a relatively new method.
A recent study was created with the purpose of evaluating the clinical effect of (previously named) Hanna Somatic Education on low back and/or neck pain and determine differences in:
🌻Pain levels
🌻use of pain medication
🌻and number of doctor visits
before and after 6 months of HSE sessions.
About the author of the study:
The author of the study, Qiuju Huang, was an experienced senior nurse clinician in Saudi Arabia where a serious injury to her lower back caused disc protrusion preventing her from exercising or working.
After trying every other method available, she discovered Hanna Somatic Education.
Once she was healed from her pain from somatic movements, she enrolled in professional training at the Novato Institute for Somatic Research & Training to become a Hanna Somatic Educator.
Qiuju ended up working with hundreds of patients in the Employee Health Clinic, where she worked and had the support of hospital management.
Study parameters:
This retrospective study:
🌻 involved 103 patients
🌻ranging in age from 27-71 years old
🌻who had experienced lower back pain and/or neck pain for longer than 2 months.
🌻All patients participated in between 2-5 private sessions of HSE (also known as Clinical Somatic Education)
🌻over the course of 2-8 weeks.
Voluntary pandiculation was taught with the purpose of the sessions to teach the patients how to practice them on their own at home.
The patients’ levels of pain were recorded before and after each session, using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale on a scale of 0-5 (0=no pain; 5=worst possible pain).
Medication use and number of doctor visits before and after the HSE intervention were also recorded.
As you can see from the charts below, there were significant reductions in lower back and/or neck pain after completing (only) about 3 sessions of HSE and practicing these movements regularly on their own at home.
🌻Even better,
the 6 month follow-up showed the pain reductions were sustained,
as 73.5% of patients stopped using their pain medications,
and the mean number of doctors’ visits
was reduced overall by 75%! 🌻
The study authors write:
“The collective findings of these studies indicate that somatic education in general is a viable nonpharmacologic therapy for sustained reduction in low back and/or neck pain.”
Can practice somatic movement exercises on your own time in the convenience of your own home
Don’t have to make a doctor’s appointment
Don’t have to deal with insurance
Don’t have to purchase any tools that you have to take with you, or that contains toxic materials
Take control over your pain instead of being a victim to your pain
Free yourself from the fear of remaining in pain or falling back into pain
Enjoy the activities you gave up due to the pain
Sleep better
Have better energy
Possibly stop taking pain meds
These are just a few of the real-life benefits our students experience after completing the courses.
